Logo for Story Circle Storytelling combines the intensity of a solo performance with the intimacy of a face-to-face conversation. "Storytelling at its best is mutual creation. Through the interaction between teller and listener, storytelling speaks to the inner child to nurture the human spirit." - Ellin Greene, author of Storytelling: Art & Technique.

Workshops and Conferences

April 14 Saturday For anyone who likes to journal or needs gentle, specific encouragement for memoir-writing or life storytelling, Maggie Whelan is offering a great one-day workshop. According to Marni Gillard, Maggie has had several of her life-story pieces published. And she's a great teacher. The workshop will be held at the Dominican Retreat & Conference Center 1945 Union ST. (Rt 7), Niskayuna. Call 393-4169 or email dslcny@nycap.rr.com $30 for the one day program. Want a weekend getaway? Connect Maggie's workshop to Awakening Creativity, Sunday April 15 with Claudia Gregiore.

April 18 Wednesday 6:30 – 9:30 pm.  Michael Parent will be giving a master class for Story Circle members at Kate Dudding’s home: 8 Sandalwood Drive, Clifton Park  (approx. 2 miles from Exit 9 off the Northway)Cost: $10 / SCCD members; Limit: 15 attendees.  Storytelling Troubleshoot This is a workshop for people who are already telling stories. Bring specific storytelling problems or challenges you are facing and Michael will assist you, often with the aid of the assembled group. The more concretely and specifically participants can state the challenges they're facing, the more likely they are to get some truly useful feedback.  For example, to state that "I'm having trouble with audience participation” is not as useful as "When I get children to participate by making animal sounds, I sometimes can't stop them." This workshop is in lieu of our April meeting. It is underwritten by Story Circle membership funds (Michael will be paid $200 from SCCD membership money plus $10 per participant.) Michael is in town as one of the featured tellers at the Riverway Storytelling Festival:  www.RiverwayStorytellingFestival.org. To reserve your space, send a $10 check, made out to “Story Circle” to: Kate Dudding, 8 Sandalwood Drive, Clifton Park, NY 12065-2700.

April 21 Saturday 3;00 – 4:30 pm “I'm Talking, They're Listening, Oh-Oh: Creative Ways to Reduce Anxiety and Enhance Communication” with Michael Parent. Does the idea of standing in front of an audience, all eyes on you, make you start to sweat? Whether you make presentations or tell stories, you can learn to manage your performance anxiety and become a more effective presenter or storyteller.  Using demonstrations and exercises, Michael Parent will help participants learn to overcome difficult performance hurdles through.  For presenters and storytellers of all levels. (518) 458-9274 William K. Sanford Town Library, Colonie. Look for more information at www.RiverwayStorytellingFestival.org $20.00 for Adults and $10.00 for students.

 Story Circle Financial Report

By Kate Dudding

This is the financial information presented at the January Story Circle meeting.
Good news
We have enough money to offer 5 CSPF grants this year.
Membership money pays for mailings and a workshop with a bit of money left over.
Story Sundays is paying for itself.
Money raised from Patrons donations paying for 85% of our production costs at Proctors so the tellers are getting more money for their hard work and great stories.
The not so good news re: Tellabration
There is dropping attendance (172 in 2009, 160 in 2010, 135 in 2011) which might be because Tellabration is the same each year - humorous stories.
Joe and  Kate think Tellabration needs new ways to make it different so people will think, "Wow-- I really have to come in 2012."
